Latest project - Affordable housing for Wandle Housing Association
This development at Camberwell New Road, Elephant & Castle, London, for Wandle Housing Association, accommodates a total of 103 residential dwellings in a mixture of flats, duplexes and houses. In addition, there are 2/3 small retail units at ground floor level.Ranging from 4 to 6 storeys the main frame is concrete flat slab construction on piled foundations, externally clad in brickwork with metal stud inner leaf. All roofs are flat with various finishes including ‘green’ sedum roof, paved terraces and even areas of grass lawn. Many of the slabs require the flexibilty to install disabled access lifts in the future, resulting in the need to allow for sacrificial areas of slab. Balconies and enclosed ‘winter gardens’ cantilever from the building, all of which are isolated thermally from the main frame.

Research and design project launched for students at HTC
Year 9 Engineering students at HTC have recently embarked on a project to research, design and develop a system to collect, store and use rain water on the college site. The project run by the Go4SET (Go for Science Engineering and Technology) organization in conjunction with Warings Construction was launched last month at Portsmouth football club. The students will work in teams of five or six, with the support of their teacher and with that of an industry mentor. The first mentor session held on the 3rd of December was attended by Mr Simon Greaves a project manager for Warings and Mr Robert Pragnell a Partner at Structural, Civil and Environmental Consultant Engineers Gyoury Self. The industry mentors are intended to help the students gain a real life perspective on the engineering design problems faced as well as provide the expert guidance needed to formulate a winning competition entry. The teams, competing against groups from many other local schools, must complete their research and development ready for the Celebration and Assessment Day in March. Portsmouth Historic Bell Tower Project
Gyoury Self have recently been involved in an interesting project in Portsmouth. The Victorian bells in Portsmouth Guildhall were placed out of commission a number of years ago due to corrosion of the bell support framework and the bells being out of tune. After a sustained local campaign, the Council decided to remove the bells to a bell foundry in Loughborough for refurbishment and retuning. The contract for this work was awarded to Mansell Construction Services Limited, who appointed Gyoury Self as lead Consultant for the project. There are a total of five bells in the bell tower, with the largest bell weighing four tonnes. A temporary scaffold platform had to be constructed adjacent to the bell tower, spanning over the roof of the Guildhall Council Chamber, to provide a working platform and to support the bells during their removal from the bell tower. All of the bells had to be temporarily supported whilst the original framework was removed. Gyoury Self were responsible for reviewing the design of the scaffolding and designing the temporary bell support structure. Once the framework was removed, the bells were carefully moved horizontally out of the bell tower and on to the scaffold platform, where they were craned on to a lorry to take them to the bell foundry. After the bells were removed, a new access platform and internal steel staircase were constructed within the bell tower. The new bell support framework was constructed before the bells were re-lifted and fixed to the frame. The project received a large amount of local media interest. Gyoury Self were involved from the initial conception of the project through to the completion of the project. We worked very closely with Mansell Construction and advised on all aspects of the project including programming, design, temporary works, checking of the existing structure for construction loading and liaising with sub-contractors.
