Charlie White – Technician in Training

Charlie White

We take pleasure in introducing Charlie White, a young recruit who is undergoing training as a Revit Technician with our Brighton and Hove technical team.

Since joining the Gyoury Self Sussex office in August, Charlie has been learning the fundamentals of structural engineering and developing his general construction knowledge. Already getting to grips with Revit and the concept of working within the BIM environment, he is preparing 3D models and detailing under the guidance of senior technicians and structural engineers.

Prior to joining us, Charlie was working in the computer games industry as a programmer and although it is may seem to be a complete contrast to engineering he is putting his previously learnt skills and experience to good use. This background, good qualifications in maths and physics and a desire to learn new things, has also stood Charlie in good stead for pursuing a career as an engineering technician.

Charlie has not taken the traditional technician route by advancing via AutoCAD and this can be a distinct advantage when learning Revit from scratch, so he is picking up the basics of this complex 4D BIM capable programme very swiftly.

In November Charlie will be undergo a Revit Structural Essentials course with CAD Assist; an authorised Autodesk training centre. The course will enable him to build on his knowledge and help improve accuracy and productivity.

Overall, the course and in-house training with Gyoury Self will take Charlie one step closer to his aim of becoming a fully qualified Revit Technician collaborating with others to produce complex 3D co-ordinated BIM models.

During Charlie’s training he will get the opportunity to attend site visits with more senior team members to experience projects at different stages of construction. Familiarising him with how the industry works as whole will form the basis of his longer term career working with our BIM-enabled technical team.

The UK engineering industry is facing a major skills gap and as a forward-thinking company we remain committed to providing training opportunities for young technicians and graduate engineers. Training up new recruits within a fast-paced engineering environment can present substantial challenges but Charlie is showing great potential and we are keen to help him achieve his aim of becoming a fully qualified Revit Technician.  Rick Potterton, Managing Partner
