Structural engineer in the making

Kai Rahman

We are delighted to have budding structural engineer Kai Rahman back in our Brighton and Hove office this week on work experience. Kai was studying at the Priory School in Lewes when he contacted us last year seeking hands-on structural engineering experience. Kai’s highlights from that first visit included gaining insight into the engineering industry and learning how to use AutoCAD.

“I have always been interested in large scale structural engineering projects. I had no workplace experience when I first came to Gyoury Self. I was nervous about starting work with a prestigious local firm, but it is a very efficient office with a really relaxed atmosphere”.

The experience was obviously a positive one, as Kai is back with us for another week before starting his A Level studies at BHASVIC (Brighton Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College).

This time round Kai is building on his AutoCAD experience and exploring building information modelling with REVIT, under the guidance of BIM Manager Andy Dunkerton. He is also using his local knowledge of the Falmer area to assist engineer David Malenczak with research and information gathering for a forthcoming project at the Sussex University Falmer Campus. Site visits have included Falmer and the Roman Road construction site in Hove.

Kai intends to progress to University with a view to pursuing a career as a structural engineer.

It is very refreshing to be approached by school leavers with a passion for engineering, and we would be happy to welcome Kai back to work with Gyoury Self at any point during or after his studies. Rick Potterton, Senior Partner
