Client: Harvey’s Brewery Distribution Centre
Location: Lewes, East Sussex
Year Completed: 1991
Contractor: John Molem & Co
The 3000m² distribution depot we engineered for Harvey’s Brewery (formerly Phoenix Brewery Ltd) with associated infrastructure is another early project which posed interesting challenges – including the requirement for a structure with a 45m clear span. This culminated in the design of portal frame structure incorporating two storey office accommodation.
The building was constructed on the flood plain of the River Ouse, with very soft Aluminium up to depths of 10m and a high ground water table. Consequently the building and its ground floor slab had to be supported on piled foundations and protected by a gas membrane.
Gyoury Self was engaged directly by the client to provide normal structural and civil engineering services, RIBA Stages C to K, including procurement of the site investigation and preparation of a Flood Risk Assessment.
