Located in Horsham’s town centre shopping precinct, the distinctive 4 deck, multi-storey car park replaces a previous one on the same site. Featuring perforated ‘tree patterned’ bronze effect cladding and a green living wall, the car park provides 519 parking spaces and public toilet facilities.
The steel-framed and metal deck solution was designed to create long clear spans and minimise column sizes for a more aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly car park. The cost-effective method of construction also allowed for swifter construction.
The floors are formed with steel beams supporting steel decking and a concrete topping. Stability for the structure is provided by vertical bracing in the building’s two lift and stair cores.
Due to the close proximity of existing foundations along two elevations, cantilever RC pile caps were required to support the steel columns above. The reduced weight of the superstructure was also beneficial for the foundation design.
As construction was being undertaken on a very tight town centre site, offsite fabrication allowed steel elements to be delivered and installed quickly and accurately. Steelwork also provided a solution that reduced waste material and improved site safety.
Gyoury Self provided full structural and civil engineering services on the Piries Place car park redevelopment project.
