Project Description

Client: Southern Housing Group
Location: Roman Road, Brighton and Hove
Year Completed: 2017
Project Value: £2.4m
Contractor: W Stirland Ltd
Architect: Yelo Architects

Gyoury Self provided engineering designs for a new mixed use development on an interesting infill site located at Roman Road, behind the Vega Building on Kingsway, Hove.

Commissioned by the Southern Housing Group, the development consists of office space at ground level with eight 1 and 2 bedroom apartments over the first and second floors. The development includes 15 car parking spaces, external works and landscaping.

The load bearing masonry building has pre-cast concrete floor slabs supported on piled foundations. The building style is in keeping with the adjacent Art Deco inspired Vega Building.

The Challenges

Gyoury Self undertook all structural and civil engineering design for W Stirland under a design and build contract.

The structural form is of engineered timber roof joists and pre-cast concrete floor planks supported on load-bearing masonry walls. A partial steel frame was required over the open plan, ground floor, office unit to provide a transfer structure.

Due to the weak nature of the new surface soils, the building is supported on piled foundations bearing into the underlying chalk at depth. Surface water required attenuation and storage prior to discharge into the public foul sewer at an agreed flow rate.
