The Richmond upon Thames School is a new 11-16 five form secondary school forming part of the Richmond Education and Enterprise Campus (REEC). The campus project delivers 7814m² GIFA of new build purpose-designed accommodation, providing facilities for Richmond upon Thames Secondary School, Clarendon and Newhouse Schools within a single building.

Outside spaces include five multi-purpose sports pitches for hockey, tennis, netball, direct access to 4G pitches for rugby and football, a four-court Sports Hall and multipurpose activity studio.

The Challenges

The building consists of a three-storey reinforced concrete flat slab structure, supported on a piled foundation and vibro improved ground floor slab.

The layout provided some challenges in terms of transfer structure layouts; the most substantial being required at second floor level to support classrooms constructed over the internal hall space.

A large feature staircase within the atrium structure was also required to span from floor-to-floor without intermediate support.

Working alongside ECE Architects and Willmott Dixon, Gyoury Self provided full structural and civil engineering services across this part of the extensive campus redevelopment project; which will include reconstruction of the college building in due course.
