Photo of St. Alphege Building, Winchester

Project Description

Client: University of Winchester
Location: Winchester, Hampshire
Year Completed: 2013
Contractor: Osborne
Architect: Design Engine
Contract Value: £2 Million

St. Alphege is a three storey building set into a natural bowl within the Campus grounds. Voluminous, column-free dance studios with break out and communal spaces were created using steel frames and deep precast plank floors with structural concrete toppings. This increased both the structural capacity of the planks as well as overall mass of the floor, thus reducing the susceptibility of the floor to vibration created in the dance studio environment.

The varying ground levels required the construction of a bridge link from an existing path within the Campus to connect directly to the upper floor of the building.

This building was one of the finalists for the RIBA Southern Architecture Awards 2012 and winner of the 2012 Civil Trust Awards.
