Another notable project for the University of Sussex is the Swanborough House student accommodation development.
Located on the Falmer Campus, the buildings contain a variety of 5, 6 and 7-bed flats, providing a total of 250 bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. Plus a further 2 flats adapted for students with disabilities or special needs. Each flat has a communal kitchen and social space.
The residence blocks were constructed using a pre-cast concrete panel system for the upper floors and roof, supported by an in situ transfer structure at first floor level.
Employing Modern Methods of Construction, the pre-cast system was pre-fabricated off site.
The buildings are supported on mass and reinforced concrete footings, bearing into upper middle chalk. Environmental techniques utilised to eliminate the need for comfort cooling.
