Project Description

Client: University of Brighton
Location: Varley Park, Brighton
Year Completed: 2017
Value: £14m
Contractor: Graham Construction
Architects: HNW Architects

Varley Halls was the third phase of a re-development project for the University of Brighton to deliver 635 new purpose-built student study bedrooms and a state-of-the-art Student Hub building.

This phase of the Design and Build project created four new Halls of Residence, providing a further 214 student study bedrooms at the University’s residential campus at Varley Park.

Off-site pre-fabrication enabled the main superstructures to be built with speed and economy, and to a high level of construction tolerance. The building components of these system-build units include light-gauge load-bearing steel wall panels with in-situ concrete floors.

Fully finished, self-contained bathroom pods were also prefabricated off-site and installed floor-by-floor as each building was constructed.

Designed by HNW Architects, the scheme incorporates an on site Energy Centre and has achieved a BREEAM rating of Excellent. The new Student Hub at the centre of the campus includes dining and catering facilities, a gymnasium, conference rooms and three levels of student accommodation.

Gyoury Self provided full structural and civil engineering services across the scheme. All the drawings were prepared using Revit 3D modelling to enable the scheme to meet BIM Level 2 requirements.

We also provided full structural and civil engineering services for the Phase 2 of this project.

The Challenges

The main challenge was undertaking groundworks and installing site drainage on the steeply sloping site, which sits within an Area of Outstanding Beauty in the South Downs.

Gyoury Self was at the forefront of the technical design and sequencing of these works.
