In 2008, we engineered the Yellowave sports centre on the beachfront in Brighton. Now a local landmark, the sports venue features 6 Olympic standard beach volley ball courts, cafes and offices.
Supporting the perimeter timber screening under high wind load and the potential for movement on the raised beach deposits, required careful consideration. Our solution was to provide a reinforced concrete ring-beam around the whole perimeter to tie the structure together. This prevented rotation of the screen and had the added benefit of containing the sand in the courts.
We went on to provide engineering designs for a new pavilion on site in 2014. The single storey building is used to host sporting functions and acts as studio space for year round yoga and danced based activities.
Full structural engineering works.
