WHAT WE DO

We regularly undertake multi-million pound engineering projects for private and public sector clients. This includes civil and structural consultancy on buildings ranging from universities, schools and sports facilities, to retail parks and waste transfer facilities.

Our residential projects encompass everything from affordable, publicly-commissioned apartment blocks to high-end, one-off private properties. We also have a dedicated Domestic Works team focused on fast-turnaround projects for commercial and residential clients.

Based at the Brighton & Hove office, Rick is a resourceful Chartered Structural Engineer with strong
project management skills. Since joining Gyoury Self as a graduate engineer in 1988, he has successfully delivered a wide range of projects for domestic, education, defence, residential, student accommodation, light industrial, retail and hotel clients.

As Managing Partner, Rick is in charge of the company’s overall practice, management and day-to-day operations.

Robert Pragnell, Partner

A highly-experienced Chartered Structural and Civil Engineer, Robert joined Gyoury Self in 1987 and was promoted to Partner in 2007. One of Robert’s specialisms is surveying and carrying out detailed reports for the sympathetic restoration of period and historic buildings. He also undertakes a diverse range of new build/refurbishment projects; from prestigious residential schemes through to industrial parks and hospital extensions.

Robert is in charge of our Fareham/Portmouth office, where he is responsible for day-to-day management and leadership of the engineering and technical teams.

Gavin is a Chartered Structural and Civil Engineer who has gained extensive experience over the past 20 years working on engineering projects both here in the UK and overseas. He has been project engineer on a wide variety of schemes, including a number of large design and build contracts with national contractors.

Gavin leads a dedicated team of engineers and technicians at our Brighton & Hove office, working predominantly in retail and education.

Lee Ryall, Partner

Lee Ryall, Partner
I.Eng, A.M.I.Struct.E.

Based at our Brighton & Hove office, Lee joined the Gyoury Self Partnership in 2004 as a design engineer, and worked his way up to his present appointment as a Partner in 2016.

Lee is a highly-experienced design engineer with an in-depth knowledge of construction techniques and materials. He has a great eye for detail and is adept at identifying economical solutions for complicated engineering tasks.

Leading a team of engineers and technicians, Lee’s current projects include educational buildings for universities and schools, ranging from £300k to £36million.

Company History

Gyoury Self Partnership was established in Brighton and Hove in 1980 by structural engineers Paul Gyoury and Chris Self.

A second office was opened in Eastbourne in the early 1980s, and a few years later the practice started offering Civil Engineering services. The Eastbourne office would remain in operation until the late 1990s.

Our Hampshire office was opened in 1986 on Fareham High Street, before eventually moving to its present location at The Gardens in Fareham.

The Sussex office eventually settled at its present address in Boundary Road, Hove, in 1999 and the company became incorporated as Gyoury Self Partnership LLP in 2001.

In 2002, Gyoury Self Partnership (St. Albans LLP) was established as a separate company located in St. Alban’s, Hertfordshire. Although they (almost) share the same name, the two companies are wholly independent businesses operated under the management of different owners.

Paul Gyoury and Chris Self remained partners at the Sussex office in Hove until they retired in 2003 and 2009 respectively.

The current management team is led by Rick Potterton, who has been working with the Gyoury Self Partnership at the Hove office for over 30 years. Robert Pragnell heads up the Fareham office and he has been with the Gyoury Self Partnership since 1987. The other Hove-based partners, Gavin Owens and Lee Ryall are also long-standing Gyoury Self employees with extensive structural engineering experience. Richard Aston from the Fareham office was made a Partner in January 2020 – another long-term employee who brings a wealth of engineering and project management experience to the team.
